Peter Green Marine Artist

Commissioning a picture may sound like a daunting task, but with his considerable experience and knowledge of his subject, Peter Green can make the whole process easy and even enjoyable. His aim is to give you the picture you want at a price within your budget. With a large variety of styles of painting and drawing on offer and an infinite range of sizes your chosen image can be produced at a price to suit you.

Peter can work from photographs, plans and models or from life. The easiest and usually cheapest solution is to provide a photograph showing the subject from the required angle. Peter will never merely copy a photograph as in his view this obviates the need for a painting or drawing in the first place and may also raise copyright issues. What he will do is use the photographic reference material to ensure the technical accuracy of the subject and then place it in a suitable setting, adjusting the lighting, shadows and other factors to ensure the finished work creates an illusion of reality. With his nautical background Peter can also transform dry-dock or building images into sea-going ones and show sailing vessels with sails suitably adjusted to the prevailing conditions displayed in the final picture. Even old photographs of vessels under previous ownership or sister vessels belonging to different owners may be used as colours and logos can be changed to suit. Although 'idealised' images may be produced, Peter's forte is bringing realism to his subject - even new vessels have rust around the anchors, salt staining on the hull and are not always built when the sun is shining and the sea smooth and blue!

A few simple rules may help when considering commissioning a picture:

bullet

The more quantity and quality of reference material you can provide, the more detailed and accurate the finished picture.

bullet

The more detailed and usually therefore larger a picture, the higher the cost.

bullet

The simpler the composition the cheaper the picture - only add background vessels, or port scenes if you really need them.

bullet

Generally, size for size, drawings are considerably cheaper than paintings but no less effective

Before making an enquiry, please give careful thought to what your priorities are regarding budget, size and type of picture etc. You may want a large, highly detailed painting to fit a space in your boardroom and not be too concerned about price or you may be a yacht owner wanting a portrait of your yacht at a price you can afford and not be overly concerned about the exact size and media used.
