About Us
Thames Steamers Limited operates the steam launch 'Alaska', which was built in 1883 and is the oldest working passenger steamer on the Thames. The boat is part of the National Historic Fleet alongside such esteemed craft as HMS Victory and 'Cutty Sark'.
In July 2009 ‘Alaska’ was chosen to act as the ‘Royal Barge’, taking Queen Elizabeth II along the Thames to witness the ancient ceremony of ‘Swan Upping’, the first time a reigning monarch had attended the event since Henry VIII.
'Alaska' is operated to the highest standards and is licensed as a Class V passenger vessel by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency of the Department of Transport. She is surveyed annually and Thames Steamers' operating and management procedures, training and maintenance systems are audited on a regular basis. All our staff are highly experienced and qualified to at least the minimum level required by law. Managing Director and Senior Skipper, Peter Green, is a former Merchant Navy Officer with over half a million miles logged, extensive ship management experience and has been Captain of 'Alaska' since 1995.
