Environmental
Alaska’s boiler can be fired with coal, but for environmental reasons, since spring 2008 it has been fired with high density wood briquettes made from recycled waste wood shavings and sawdust from a timber machining plant in Croydon operated by S.L. Hardwoods. All the wood used to make the fuel is harvested from approved sustainable sources. This makes Alaska's operation sustainable and carbon neutral and saves approximately 15 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in a typical year. Secondary burning of combustion gases achieved by the introduction of air across the top of the firebox increases efficiency by up to a third and reduces smoke and other emissions.
